Wellington Snapshots

Winter in Wellington was cold, windy, and rainy, but not as terrible as I had been warned. There were definitely some moments of beauty, including this gorgeous rainbow visible from the office where I was working.

For a few nights when I was walking home, there was a seal hanging out on the rocks by the bay.

My work held a wine tasting social event, and I felt it was my duty to attend. You know, for science!

Wellington holds its own light festival during the winter, for ten days in August there are installations along the waterfront. Some are interactive and have sound accompanying, some are just pretty.

The World of Wearable Art show was in Wellington (see the next post!), and some of the storefronts had related window displays. My favorite was this awesome ensemble from a vintage store on Cuba Street.

Even though there were days when it was wet and cold, there were also days when the sun came out and it was absolutely gorgeous. You really can't beat Wellington on a good day.

It's pretty impressive at night under a full moon, too!

I went to Oktoberfest with a friend, which was an interesting experience (pro-tip to the dude who was, apparently, attempting to hit on me on behalf a shy friend - if someone tells you that they had a bad day, don't then keep pestering them to tell you why, on the grounds that you know better. It will not go well. This was a day or two after I found out that my job was not going to hire me, and it was at that point too late for me to find another way to stay in New Zealand on a permanent basis). There was some amazing people-watching here, and more lederhosen than you could shake a stick at.

There was also a fabulous polka band doing covers of modern pop music. Polka makes everything better!
