North Island Road Trip, Day 3

We checked out of the hotel and headed north, through more gorgeous farmland and through Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, with a population of 1.5 million (for perspective, that's a little more than a third of the total population). We continued past on the way to the Bay of Islands, our next stop. Along the way we took a detour (a last minute dive off the highway in the tradition of our family road trips). This led us to Mangawhai Beach, where I very happily spent an hour walking in the surf. It was a glorious day, sunny, warm, and only slightly breezy.

Mom and Peggy had a grand time looking for shells on the beach.

From there, it was on to the Bay of Islands, where we had a fantastic hotel on the beach. We took one last wander on the beach before heading into town for dinner. Still beautiful, but my heart belonged to Mangawhai.

We wandered into town and had a bit of a wander before having a nice dinner on the waterfront. It's a lovely little tourist town.
